As a trumpeter, he has recorded over 20 albums and performed with the likes of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Cassandra Wilson, Wynton and Branford Marsalis. He is a prolific film composer, having scored for many Spike Lee films such as Do the Right Thing (1989) and Malcolm X (1992), and others like Red Tails (2012) and One Night in Miami... (2020). This tune is from the 2018 movie BlackkKlansman, and the complete score from this movie was nominated for an Oscar.

Ideas for discussion questions:

  1. How does Blanchard treat the main theme?

  2. What type of scene can you imagine this piece underscoring?

  3. Why spell it BlackkKlansman?

  4. What does the picture tell you about the movie?

  5. Can you name any other Black film composers?
